MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (AP) - Ahead 2-up with two holes to play, it was the match that Australians Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day should have won for the International team at the Presidents Cup.

But Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, aided by an errant tee shot by Baddeley on the 18th, came back for a half in fourballs that felt like a win. That helped the United States take a 4-2 lead in points Thursday after the opening day at Royal Melbourne.

Johnson, who made a testing four-foot putt on the 18th after the Internationals had bogeyed, said “we were down all day but we just hung in there and came out with a half.”

As Johnson walked off, he was congratulated by International captain Greg Norman, who said: “You just killed my day.”
