Not only is Dr. Milton Wolf correct about the unconstitutional final “9” of GOP contender Herman Cain’s revised tax plan (“9-9-no way,” Commentary, Oct. 25) but the idea of a 9 percent federal sales tax raises the following question: If the federal government is going to receive 9 percent of all of the earnings of every working person and every business in the country, why does it need a sales tax, or any other kind of tax on top of that?

Surely, 9 percent of all the nation’s income is generous enough to meet federal needs. If there is to be a sales tax, that money should be collected by each state in lieu of state income tax. Our government will just have to learn to cut their coat to fit their cloth. With the exception of 535 citizens on Capitol Hill, we have all had to do that in the past three years, so it is time that privileged group did the same.
