George Washington will introduce Mike Lonergan as its basketball coach Monday during a noon press conference in Foggy Bottom.
Lonergan, who spent the past six seasons at Vermont and made one NCAA tournament appearance, agreed to a five-year deal to take over for the fired Karl Hobbs.
The Colonials, who have not made the NCAA tournament since 2007, were 17-14 and 10-6 in the Atlantic 10 last season.
“We’ve made it really clear that the expectation is to build on that,” George Washington athletic director Patrick Nero said in a conference call with reporters. “We want to build a program that long-term can get to the point of being in the top third of the Atlantic 10 and be in the discussion for the NCAA tournament and to make it to the NCAA tournament.”
Lonergan was 126-68 at Vermont. The Bowie, Md., native also spent a dozen seasons at Division III Catholic University, where he won a national title in 2001. Overall, he is 377-156 in 18 years as a head coach.
