A D.C. man pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault with intent to kill while armed in connection with a December shooting in the Third Street Tunnel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District said.

Albert Greer, 24, is expected to get between 90 and 180 months in prison when he is sentenced in D.C. Superior Court on July 15.

At a plea hearing, Mr. Greer acknowledged that he was in the passenger’s seat of a car going southbound on Interstate 395 when he fired at a Toyota Venza with four passengers at about 3:10 a.m. on Dec. 26.

Authorities said the shooting occurred after the driver of the Toyota tried to merge into the lane in which Greer’s car was traveling. The driver of Greer’s car refused to let the Toyota merge.

Greer put his window down and yelled something at the people in the victim’s car, none of whom he knew. Then he stuck a handgun out the front passenger’s side window and shot at the other car.

Police recovered nine shell casings from the area of the shooting, and the area around the driver’s side door of the victim’s car had at least eight bullet holes.

The driver of the Toyota, who was 33, was admitted to a hospital in critical condition. He was shot twice [-] one bullet entered under his left armpit, the second entered his left thigh [-] and doctors performed surgery. The bullet that entered under the victim’s left armpit pierced his spleen and bruised one of his kidneys.

Greer was arrested on March 30.
