The D.C. council sent off at-large member Sekou Biddle through gift and song at his last legislative meeting.
Mr. Biddle, who turned 40 Tuesday, was appointed to the council in January to fill a vacancy left by Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown. He will leave the seat this month to make way for Vincent B. Orange, who will be sworn in Tuesday after defeating Mr. Biddle and seven other candidates in an April 26 special election.
Mr. Brown presented a glass bowl to Mr. Biddle and welcomed him to “the four-zero club,” prompting an enthusiastic round of “Happy Birthday.”
“That might be one of the few times you’ll see us in harmony,” Mr. Brown said.
Council Member Muriel Bowser, of Ward 4, noted Mr. Biddle’s accomplishments during his few months with the council, and Ward 6 member Tommy Wells said it was “a pleasure” to be arrested with him during a rally on D.C. autonomy last month.
“You really get to know someone when you spend an indeterminate amount of time with them,” Mr. Wells quipped.
