Many years ago when I was as a young Marine on embassy duty, we were told to play “America the Beautiful” and never “The Star-Spangled Banner” during ceremonies when the ambassador of Great Britain was in attendance, as it was considered a slight.

Tuesday morning, I saw Queen Elizabeth II with President Obama at Buckingham Palace, where they played “The Star-Spangled Banner” for him. Has protocol changed or is this a subtle display of appeasement of President Obama?
