Sen. Richard J. Durbin warned Congress on Sunday against the idea of refusing to raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion deficit ceiling.
“Those few — and I think totally irresponsible — members of Congress who say it really doesn’t make any difference if we default are being irresponsible with one of the most significant economic issues that we’re going to face,” Mr. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Mr. Durbin, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, said the recent defection of Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, from the “Gang of Six” should not derail the deficit-reduction committee’s work.
“If we’re going to do our job, we have to do it together,” he said.
