GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The NCAA has placed East Carolina on one year of probation for self-reported academic fraud violations after a women’s tennis player working as a tutor wrote papers for four baseball players.
In announcing the decision Thursday, the NCAA said two of the baseball players also provided false and misleading information during the school’s investigation.
East Carolina chancellor Steve Ballard says the school is embarrassed by students who “acted on their own volition.”
In addition to receiving a public reprimand, East Carolina must vacate the 17 baseball games and eight women’s tennis matches from last season in which the athletes played.
The probation does not include a postseason ban or any recruiting sanctions or scholarship reductions.
