D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray on Wednesday announced his picks to lead the D.C. Department of Transportation and the medical team within the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Mr. Gray selected interim DDOT Director Terry Bellamy to fill the post permanently. Mr. Bellamy joined the department in March 2008 and has 27 years of experience in the transportation field, according to the administration.
Mr. Bellamy, a Ward 6 resident, called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to work in the nation’s capital.
“We are the incubator of the world,” he said, noting innovation is key. “Everybody comes to D.C. to see what we’re doing, and we want to continue to bring new technology to the world.”
Before joining DDOT, Mr. Bellamy served as bureau chief of Transportation, Engineering and Operations in Arlington County for eight years. Before that, he worked in North Carolina.
David Miramontes will serve as medical director for the fire department. He most recently served as an attending physician, faculty member and EMS director for Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. He has served as EMS medical director for numerous fire departments and agencies in northwestern Ohio.
The mayor said his appointment fills a medical director vacancy that had been open since February 2010. He said the primary challenges for any city’s emergency medical services are managing resources and keeping up with medicine as it changes “at lightning speed.”
