Terrence D. Kalley does not go far enough in his condemnation of the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA to breast cancer patients: Shut up and die,” Commentary, Thursday).

There should be a total separation of government and medicine rather than the government deciding which treatments are “approved.” It should be left to practitioners, patients and families to decide which treatments have an acceptable risk-benefit ratio.
