COLLEGE PARK, MD. (AP) - Mark Turgeon says he turned down plenty of jobs during his four years at Texas A&M, until Maryland came calling _ then it was time to go.
Turgeon was introduced as the Terrapins’ new coach Wednesday, two days after signing on to become the successor to Gary Williams.
Turgeon says he left Texas A&M because Terps basketball has a “great tradition” and that “Maryland is a special place.”
Before accepting the job, Turgeon made a phone call to Williams, who had the job for 22 years before retiring last week. Turgeon said Williams “had a lot to do with me being here.”
Texas A&M reached the NCAA tournament in each of Turgeon’s four years at the school, and he hopes for similar success after leaving College Station for College Park.
