ROME (AP) - Novak Djokovic’s unbeaten start to the season is signaling a potential power shift in tennis, and Roger Federer is taking note.
Djokovic passed Federer for the No. 2 ranking in March and is threatening Rafael Nadal for No. 1 at this week’s Italian Open after beating the Spaniard in straight sets in Sunday’s Madrid Open final. That improved his record to 32-0 this year.
Federer said Tuesday this is an interesting time in tennis. He calls it a “new, different situation, but for me it doesn’t change a whole lot.”
He acknowledges that Nadal and Djokovic are playing better than everyone right now. The Swiss star adds that with so many players able to compete on all surfaces, it’s “extremely hard to win all these big tournaments.”
