ATLANTA (AP) - Relatives say former CNN president Burt Reinhardt, a television pioneer who is credited with helping to build the global news network, has died at his home in suburban Atlanta. He was 91.

Cheryl Reinhardt said her father suffered from ischemic strokes and died Tuesday at his home in Marietta.

She said her father joined CNN in 1979 just before it launched officially. Turner Broadcasting founder Ted Turner named Reinhardt president in 1983. His daughter said he remained with the company until he retired in 2003.

Ex-CNN President Tom Johnson said that without Reinhardt, it is doubtful the news station would exist today.

Former CNN journalist Lou Dobbs said Reinhardt put together his first contract in 1980, and “I just feel privileged to have known him.”
