WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. John McCain on Tuesday renewed his call for imposition of a “no-fly zone” over Libya, saying he doesn’t believe that would lead inevitably to U.S. troops on the ground.

Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican, told CBS’ “The Early Show” he understands weariness at home over U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Mr. McCain said the American people “are not prepared to watch … one of the two or three worst despots in the world sit and slaughter innocent civilians.”

Mr. McCain said: “I don’t think we should end up on the ground. I think it would be counterproductive for us to send in ground forces.” He said that a no-fly zone is needed because Col. Moammar Gadhafi, the Libyan leader, has been able to use his air power to hold sway against untrained troops.
