The assertion made in the March 24 editorial that the Transportation Security Administration “dialed back” its screening procedures at any time is unfounded (“Groping for a TSA solution,” Comment & Analysis, March 25).

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a risk-based agency, and we implement security procedures based on intelligence that help keep the traveling public safe. Each and every security layer is built to that end - deterring and defeating our determined and evolving enemy. While we value the input and partnership of the traveling public, we will never compromise the safety of American travelers in order to avoid scrutiny. Any suggestion otherwise is entirely false.

As part of our goal of providing the highest level of security while protecting individual freedoms, TSA is testing automated software for advanced imaging technology that even further addresses privacy concerns while still maintaining the same level of detection capability. We are also exploring the concept of a voluntary “known traveler” program that would move us away from a one-size-fits-all approach to airport screening.

We continue to engage with our partners in the aviation and mass transit industries, law enforcement, the intelligence community, federal and state legislators and with our greatest partner - the traveling public - to implement measures that ensure every passenger is safe while traveling. Securing our nation’s transportation systems is TSA’s No. 1 priority, and we are unwavering in our dedication to our mission.
