TAMPA, FLA. (AP) - Right-hander Kevin Millwood agreed Friday to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees.
Millwood would get a $1.5 million, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster. He would have the chance to earn $3.5 million more in performance bonuses: $500,000 each for five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 starts. He would get an additional $1 million for 30 starts.
“I don’t know if he can help us or not,” New York general manager Brian Cashman said. “No-risk, possible-reward option.”
If Millwood is not added to the major league roster by May 1, he can opt out of the deal. The agreement is subject to a physical.
Cashman said Millwood has been working out at UC-Irvine, and that he will pitch at the Yankees’ spring training complex until joining Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 36-year-old was 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA last season with Baltimore, where his 3.26 runs per game of support was the second-lowest in the AL, ahead of only Seattle’s Felix Hernandez at 3.10.
Millwood is 159-137 with a 4.11 ERA in 14 big league seasons with Atlanta (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09) and Baltimore (2010).
