VIERA, Fla. | Bryce Harper sprained his left ankle after stepping awkwardly on first base during an intrasquad game Monday at the Nationals’ minor league complex.
Harper was said to be in a considerable amount of pain and was immediately removed from the field and examined. The Nationals later listed the 18-year-old phenom as day-to-day.
“The little bit of information I got was that he’s fine,” said Nationals manager Jim Riggleman. “Just turned his ankle and he’s fine.”
Harper passed along the same reassurance, tweeting late Monday: “Everybody thank you for all the kind words and thoughts about me getting better! I feel good and I expect to be out there asap! :)”
The Nationals’ No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft, Harper spent most of the spring’s first four weeks in major league camp, but was optioned to Single-A Hagerstown on March 12 and has been in minor league camp since then.
