WASHINGTON | The House committee that oversees D.C. will investigate allegations against Mayor Vincent Gray’s office by a former mayoral candidate.

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, said Thursday that his investigative staff with the Oversight and Government Reform Committee has been unable to interview people close to the mayor, including his former chief of staff, who was fired on Wednesday.

Issa says he’s concerned about the allegations by Sulaimon Brown, the former candidate. Brown says he was given cash and promised a city job during last year’s campaign if he continued attacks on the former mayor.

Gray says in a statement that he welcomes any investigation into the matter and will cooperate fully. Gray has denied giving Brown cash and says Brown was promised an interview, not a job.
