OPINION:
Wisconsin Democrat Bob Jauch recently said Republicans “chose to ram this bill [revising public employees’ bargaining power] through. …” (“Wisconsin Senate OKs anti-union measure,” Politics, Thursday). Yet, when the Democrats in Congress did this, Republicans didn’t flee Capitol Hill.
Instead, they stayed and debated the issue. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and the legislature gave the Democrats three weeks to return to the state capital, but the Democrats chose to remain in exile and thwart the business of government. With Obamacare, Senate Democrats rejected virtually every amendment offered by Republicans. When the Democrats lost their majority in the Senate last November, House Democrats conspired with the Senate Democrats by making no changes, in an effort to avoid returning Obamacare to the Senate, which would have rejected it.
It seems Democrats approve of legislative sleight-of-hand only when it benefits them.
