NEW YORK (AP) - The stagehands’ union is planning a picket line outside the Tony Awards _ complete with a giant inflatable rat.
The New York Times says that could cause at least some actors to skip the red carpet because they’re members of another union, Actors’ Equity.
The dispute involves Local 1 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
Managing Producer Allan Williams says an outside crew has been assembled because the Tony Awards and union could not agree on a work contract for the red carpet.
Union president James J. Claffey Jr. blames management and says everyone wants the Tonys “to be a great night.”
The ceremony will be Sunday night at the Beacon Theater, with the red carpet a block away.
