FAR HILLS, N.J. (AP) - Richie Ramsay of Scotland missed a wedding reception, then missed his playoff at a U.S. Open qualifier. But he won’t miss out on a chance to play the U.S. Open.
USGA spokesman Pete Kowalski said Tuesday that two extra spots were given to qualifying sites in England and Japan. Ramsay was the first alternate in England, meaning he will be at Congressional on June 16-19 for the U.S. Open.
Ramsay left Walton Heath on May 30 to attend a wedding reception, thinking his score would not be good enough. He missed his flight to the reception, found out he would be in a playoff and couldn’t get back to the course in time.
What he had described as an awful day turn out to have a happy ending for the former U.S. Amateur champion.
The first alternate from the Japan qualifier is Masaya Tomida.
