DETROIT (AP) - The New York Mets went nearly two years without a grand slam _ then hit two in two innings.
Jason Bay and Carlos Beltran each cleared the bases against Detroit reliever Daniel Schlereth, giving New York a 13-0 lead in the fifth inning Tuesday night.
The Mets had been without a grand slam since Angel Pagan hit one Aug. 1, 2009, before Bay’s drive stayed fair down the left-field line to make it 9-0 in the fourth.
It was the third career slam for Bay and the ninth for Beltran.
The Mets gave up 18 grand slams during their drought, most in the majors in that span, according to STATS LLC. The Milwaukee Brewers are now the team with the longest dry spell, with no grand slams since June 14, 2010.
The last club with grand slams in back-to-back innings was Washington on July 27, 2009, according to STATS.
