ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) - Shortstop Elvis Andrus will be out of the Texas Rangers’ lineup at least through the weekend because of a sore left wrist.
Andrus came to the clubhouse Saturday with a wet wrap around his wrist, a day after getting hurt with an awkward headfirst slide on a stolen base.
“It’s kind of stiff,” Andrus said. “It bothers me a little bit, but I don’t think it will take too long. Maybe a few days and be back on the field.”
When Andrus came out of Friday night’s game, the Rangers said he had a wrist sprain. Andres was expected to have his wrist evaluated by a team doctor Saturday.
Andres Blanco, who replaced Andrus halfway through Friday night’s game, was in the starting lineup Saturday against the New York Mets.
Manager Ron Washington said that Andrus also won’t play Sunday. The Rangers then have a day off Monday before opening a three-game series in Houston.
“He’s not playing (Sunday) even if I get a good report,” Washington said.
In the fourth inning Friday night, on his 22nd stolen base of the season, Andrus’ left hand buckled awkwardly on the ground with so much force that he rolled onto his right shoulder while going into second base.
“It was one of those freak things,” Washington said.
Andrus, who is second in the American League in stolen bases, said he might go back to sliding feet first into second base.
“My first year, I never liked diving with my hand, just third base. But I saw that I have more chances stealing bases, I started it this year,” Andrus said. “I might get back and just go my feet first. Third base, I don’t have any problem. I don’t know why. But at second, it’s different.”
After a slow start this season, Andrus is hitting .278 with three home runs and 30 RBIs. He hit .316 over his past 19 games, including two hits and a sacrifice bunt before getting hurt against the Mets.
