The most damaging lie in government is the one likely told by about 99 percent of Congress: The money and favors provided by special interests and lobbyists have no effect on the votes Congress members cast on legislation (“The lying double standard,” Commentary, June 14). Sure they don’t. I guess the special interests are private-sector people who enjoy spending millions of dollars with no expectation of benefit.

Until there is effective campaign finance reform, our government will continue to be owned by special interests.
