HAVANA (AP) - Cuban scientists calculate that median sea levels around the Caribbean nation will rise more than 30 inches (75 centimeters) by the end of the century due to global climate change.
Abel Centella is scientific director of the country’s Meteorological Institute. He is quoted by the Communist Party daily Granma as saying that models predict the sea will rise 10.6 inches by 2050, and 33.5 inches (85 centimeters) by 2100.
The article does not give details of what preparations the island is undertaking, but it says scientists are closely monitoring sea levels.
Government scientist Marcelino Hernandez says it is urgent to preserve coastal mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass and sandy beaches. All provide a natural barrier to mitigate sea encroachment.
Granma’s article appeared Friday.
