WASHINGTON (AP) — Two of the CIA’s biggest mistakes made under President George W. Bush are coming under fresh scrutiny.
The CIA’s inspector general has reopened its investigation into a botched 2003 operation in which a vacationing German citizen was snatched and sent to a secret prison. He was the wrong man, and the operation became a diplomatic embarrassment for the United States. The inspector general’s investigation had been dormant for years.
Meanwhile, a prosecutor investigating CIA misconduct has opened a torture and war crimes investigation into the 2003 death of Manadel al-Jamadi, who died under CIA interrogation at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. That investigation first was reported by Time magazine.
Both inquiries were confirmed by people close to the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigations are secret.
