NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter doubled for his 2,998th career hit, then grounded out in his second at-bat Thursday night, leaving the New York Yankees star two hits from reaching one of baseball’s biggest milestones.
With the Yankee Stadium crowd standing and cheering, Jeter bounced out to third base with runners on second and third to end the second inning.
Jeter began his night by sharply lining the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay’s Jeff Niemann to left-center field for a double. His parents were among the fans applauding as the ball was relayed back to the infield.
Jeter is trying to become the 28th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits, and the first to do it while playing for the Yankees.
