NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter doubled in the first inning Thursday night, giving the New York Yankees star his 2,998th career hit.
Jeter led off by lining the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay’s Jeff Niemann to left-center field.
A cheering crowd that included his mother and father applauded as the ball was relayed back to the infield.
Jeter is trying to become the 28th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits, and the first to do it while playing for the Yankees.
