CLEVELAND (AP) - Derek Jeter walked his third time up, leaving the New York Yankees shortstop hitless and four shy of reaching 3,000 for his career.
With the Yankees trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, Jeter battled Cleveland’s Justin Masterson in a nine-pitch at-bat before drawing the walk _ the first issued by Indians righty.
Jeter struck out leading off the first, and flied to medium center in the third. He remains stuck on 2,996 hits.
The 12-time All-Star is close to becoming the 28th major leaguer with 3,000 hits. When the 37-year-old reaches the milestone, he will be the first player in New York’s fabled history to do it having only played for the Yankees.
