CLEVELAND (AP) - Derek Jeter flied out in his second at-bat Wednesday night, leaving the New York Yankees shortstop four hits shy of reaching 3,000 for his career.
Jeter struck out leading off the first inning and hit a fly to medium center off Cleveland’s Justin Masterson in the third.
It wasn’t certain the 12-time All-Star would be in the lineup before Jeter persuaded manager Joe Girardi to play him for a third straight day after returning from a three-week stint on the disabled list with a calf injury.
Jeter entered the game with 2,996 hits, closing in on becoming the 28th major leaguer with 3,000. When the 37-year-old reaches the milestone, he will be the first player in New York’s fabled history to do it having only played for the Yankees.
