WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities said thunderstorms that swept through the D.C. region Sunday killed a man and left thousands without power.

National Park Service spokesman Bill Line said the man was bicycling on the C&O Canal towpath in Montgomery County, Md., when he was struck and killed by a falling tree about 8 p.m. Sunday.

The man, believed to be in his early 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

High winds also brought down power lines, knocking out power to thousands of customers.

At 8:45 a.m. Monday, Dominion Virginia Power was reporting about 6,800 customers without power in Northern Virginia. Pepco was reporting about 700 customers without power in the District of Columbia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

The storms also caused authorities to evacuate the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday.
