MINGORA, Pakistan (AP) — Militants attacked a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan late Saturday, killing three police officers and wounding one, police said Sunday.

Police Chief Jahanzeb Khan said the militants attacked the checkpoint in the Karora area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province around midnight. Chief Khan heads the police force in Shangla district, where Karora is located.

Karora is near the Swat Valley, an area that Taliban militants overran several years ago before the army launched a major offensive in the spring of 2009. Violence has dropped in the area, but militants still carry out occasional attacks.
