Clearly, Speaker of the House John A. Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell want to be remembered as “nice guys.” When I was younger, I wanted to be a “nice guy,” too, but when I grew up, I put away childish things.

No offense to large aquatic reptiles, but President Obama acts like a hungry crocodile. Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell, meanwhile, act like appeasers. The late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had this to say about appeasers and crocodiles: “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.” Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell will keep compromising with the White House because they are appeasers and they do not understand Mr. Obama or his brand of tyranny.

Any show of weakness by Mr. McConnell and Mr. Boehner in the current, stalled “negotiations” will embolden Mr. Obama to take more from taxpayers, spend more, destroy more of our freedoms and tighten his grip on power.

Churchill’s response to Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of “peace for our time” was proper: “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war.” Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell have been given a choice between conflict with the White House and dishonor. If they compromise with Mr. Obama, they will have chosen the latter and all-out political war for the survival of America will follow.
