Betty White declines invite to Marine Corps ball
The third time may not be a charm for Marine Sgt. Ray Lewis. Last week, the deployed Marine asked Emmy Award-winning actress Betty White, 89, to the Commandant’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball in November, but she politely declined.
Sgt. Lewis invited her in the same tried-and-true fashion as Cpl. Kelsey de Santis asked Justin Timberlake and Sgt. Scott Moore asked Mila Kunis - with a YouTube video.
“She’s funny, she’s sweet, she’s mature. She’s the all-around perfect woman,” Sgt. Lewis said, while dressed in formalwear and holding a rose. “I really think we’d have a good time. … I think I can make her laugh. I think she can make me laugh. I think we can laugh together. So, call me!”
Unfortunately, Miss White’s tight filming schedule prevented her from saying yes, even if she wanted to go.
“I am deeply flattered and truly appreciate the invitation, as everyone knows I love a man in uniform,” Miss White said in a statement, according to Access Hollywood, “but unfortunately I cannot accept, as I will be taping an episode of ’Hot In Cleveland.’ “
In her inimitably sweet fashion, America’s graying sweetheart added, “Love, Betty White.”
Khloe Kardashian, husband Odom tweet about fatal car accident
The 15-year-old boy struck last week by a car carrying Khloe Kardashian’s husband, Lamar Odom, died shortly afterward, E! News reported Tuesday.
Mr. Odom’s chauffeured car, which was escorting the basketball player to a cousin’s funeral in Queens, N.Y., collided with a motorcycle. The motorcycle then hit a pedestrian riding a scooter. The teenage boy, along with the motorcyclist, was rushed to a hospital Thursday.
“[The boy] passed Friday,” Dario Centorcelli, a spokesman at New York City’s Elmhurst Hospital, told E! News. “He was brought in late afternoon about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was on a scooter and was hit by a motorcycle that was hit by another vehicle. He suffered serious head injuries.”
Family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of the boy during funeral services Monday.
When they learned of his death, the Lakers basketball star and reality TV celeb tweeted condolences to everyone involved.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the young boys family,” Mr. Odom tweeted early Tuesday.
Miss Kardashian wasn’t with Mr. Odom in the car at the time of the incident but took to the Twittersphere anyway - not to offer condolences, but to address how the accident would strengthen her and her husband’s bond.
“@HusbandWifeLife Thank you SO much for your love and support!” the reality television star proclaimed on Twitter. “This makes US stronger as a couple! God has us in his hands.”
New doll shows little girls how to breast-feed
Thanks to the Breast Milk Baby, a new doll by Spanish company Berjuan Toys, girls can learn how to nurse before developing breasts.
According to CBS New York, the doll is a best-selling item in Europe and on the company’s site, which says the toy “lets young girls express their love and affection in the most natural way possible, just like mommy!”
The $89 Breast Milk Baby comes with a shirt that has flowers positioned where the nipples would be on a fully developed woman. When the child wears the top and brings the doll up to the flowers, the doll makes sucking noises.
Ilina Ewen, a writer for Deep South Moms, told ABC News that the Berjuan Toys product left her speechless.
“I heard people talking about it but, honestly, I thought it was a joke,” Ms. Ewen said. “There are just things that I think kids are too little to understand. Let kids use their imagination and play with a doll and not deal with what it can do. … There’s no need to turn it into something that’s anatomically correct. Not at this age.”
Psychologist Jay Reeve explained to ABC that the toy is less about the doll and more centered on the concept of breast-feeding.
“Children have played ’parent’ with dolls for centuries, but this new twist seems to focus not on what babies are like as much as jump-starting a focus on breast-feeding,” Mr. Reeve told ABC. “I’m always a little disturbed by toys, games or products that have the impact of accelerating childhood identification with being a full-blown adult.”
