MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - David Huff pitched seven scoreless innings and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Monday.
Huff (1-0) gave up five hits and struck out five as an emergency call-up from Triple-A. Austin Kearns added a homer and Michael Brantley chipped in two hits to get the Indians off to a good start in a key AL Central division series.
Anthony Swarzak (2-3) gave up four runs _ three earned _ on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings for the Twins. Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run homer off of Chad Durbin in the ninth inning, but Vinnie Pestano came in for his second save on a sweltering day at Target Field.
Joe Mauer played at first base to stay fresh enough to catch the night game and had three hits for Minnesota. He also made two outstanding defensive plays.
The Indians came into this four-game series looking to reassert themselves atop the division and cool off the surging Twins, who had shaved 11 1/2 games off their deficit since June 1. The Twins trailed the Tribe and Tigers by five games coming into the day, a remarkable feat considering they were 20 games under .500 just about a month and a half ago.
In his first start since last August, Huff gave the Indians a deep-into-the-game start they sorely needed with another game just a few hours away in the soupy humidity.
The game was a sellout, but many of the seats were empty as more than 39,000 fans sought protection from the shade in Target Field’s concourses. The heat index was a stifling 108, a particular challenge for the players with a day-night doubleheader.
But both teams suffered unexpected setbacks just before this important series started, with the Twins having to put right-hander Scott Baker on the disabled list with elbow discomfort and the Indians shelving outfielder Grady Sizemore on Monday with a bruised right kneecap.
How hot was it?
Indians first baseman Matt LaPorta’s sweaty hands lost the grip on his bat twice in one at-bat, sending it flying down the third base line on the first swing. Even after putting some rosin on his hands, LaPorta swung and missed on strike three and the bat flew into the stands, where a fan held it up as LaPorta was booed back to the dugout.
Twins second baseman Alexi Casilla lost the handle on a grounder for an error that started Cleveland’s big third inning.
Brantley’s RBI-single got the Tribe on the board and Cabrera followed with his 17th homer of the year, standing and admiring the shot as it sailed over the high wall and into the stands for a 4-0 lead.
Struggling Twins reliever Matt Capps, who lost his job as the closer last week, gave up an upper-deck homer to Kearns in the ninth inning.
NOTES: Cabrera’s 17 HRs are one short of his career total heading into this season. … The Twins said 1B Justin Morneau (neck surgery) has started playing catch and will resume baseball activities this week. … The Indians are activating LHP Fausto Carmona (thigh) from the disabled list to start the night cap. … Both teams wore green hats in honor of Earth Day, which was back in April when their originally scheduled game was canceled because of weather.
