DENVER (AP) - Milwaukee reliever Francisco Rodriguez joined his new team in Colorado but will not serve as the closer in the series opener against the Rockies on Thursday.
The Brewers acquired Rodriguez from the New York Mets on Tuesday for cash and two players to be named. Rodriguez was the Mets closer for 2 1/2 years but the Brewers will use current closer John Axford in a save situation on Thursday, manager Ron Roenicke said.
Roenicke said Rodriguez will eventually be used in save situations for Milwaukee.
Rodriguez went 2-2 with 23 saves and a 3.16 ERA for the Mets. Axford has saved 23 games for the first-place Brewers.
