WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says there is no indication that a woman reportedly arrested for espionage in Iran is an American citizen, fueling doubts about Iranian media reports.

The official said Friday that a search of passport and other records could not find a match for the name Hall Talaian or variations of it. That’s the name given for the alleged spy in Iranian media reports. Hall was reported to be a 55-year-old American who was arrested by Iranian authorities last week while trying to enter Iran from Armenia.

The U.S. official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

Armenian officials said earlier that no one of that name had entered Armenia and Iranian state television has denied the reports.
