PASADENA, CALIF. (AP) - CNN’s Piers Morgan says he’ll open his new prime-time show with an hour-long Oprah Winfrey interview.

Morgan’s new show debuts Jan. 17, filling the time slot once held by Larry King. The former British tabloid editor said Thursday he interviewed Winfrey in California this week to give her the leadoff slot in her show.

CNN is coming off an awful year in the ratings, losing in prime-time to rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC. Morgan seemed ready for the competition in speaking to reporters on Thursday, saying: “I’m looking forward to the scrap.”

Morgan said the New York-based show would run a combination of live and taped interviews, but he’s more inclined to the taped reports.
