OPINION:
As a 15-year-old, I have noticed people my age seem to lack knowledge of the way the government works and the great consequences that can come from an election. These are both areas that need to be understood in order for one to play an active role as an American citizen.
When I talked with some of my Republican friends after President Obama won the election, they were upset, but a couple days later, they did not care. It seemed like the way people feel when their sports team loses in the playoffs - it’s disappointing, but in the long run, it doesn’t really matter.
Mr. Obama’s presidency has resulted in our national debt rising at an alarming rate, a terrible overhaul to our health care system and the government wanting to make decisions for you that you should be able to make for yourself.
People my age need to know that their future is being taken away piece by piece by the federal government. The trillions of dollars in debt are adding to the possibility that for the first time in history, a generation will be handed an America worse than the previous generation was given. Not only should my generation know this, but this should make them concerned for their future.
The Constitution tells us it is the responsibility of the people to use their First Amendment rights to tell the government when it is doing a good job and when it is doing a bad job. If a person is uneducated about the issues, how will he be able to play his part as an American citizen?
People who are not educated enough on the issues will not be able to form an opinion of their own and instead will just go along with the opinions of others.
Do your country a favor and educate your kids about government, taxes, etc. I don’t care if you are a Republican, Democrat or independent, but the people of my generation greatly need at least the basic knowledge necessary to improve the America we inherit.
