OPINION:
I can’t tell you how much I disagree with the faux display of unity in the planned mingling of Democrats and Republicans in seating for the State of the Union address (“A Kumbaya Congress,” Comment & Analysis, Thursday).
My first question is, whom does it benefit? The answer is the Democrats. On Election Day, the people spoke, and they rejected nearly the entirety of what this administration has done to the country. We need to show at the State of the Union the representation that was elected. The fact is, this is another pep rally for President Obama - an opportunity for him to espouse his agenda to our representatives and the country at large.
I want to see our representatives be vocal and visible. Cheer and agree if Mr. Obama espouses what we all agree needs to be done to move the country forward, but be vocal and unified in disagreement and opposition to those things he is sure to suggest that continue what most Americans have rejected. I want Congress to reject expanded government, increased taxes and regulations, welfare in all its forms, and nanny statism, kowtowing and apologizing to the world.
Republicans in Congress should be unified in their principles and goals. Compromise is not their friend - it is the beginning of the dissolution of the principles for which they have agreed to stand.
