BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland is interviewing Connecticut coach Randy Edsall to lead the Terrapins football program, but no hire has been made, according to a person familiar with the hiring process.
“The interview is still in progress,” the person told The Associated Press on Sunday on the condition of anonymity because the search is ongoing.
Edsall, who led Connecticut to a share of the Big East title and a Fiesta Bowl berth, and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach were among those being considered to replace the fired Ralph Friedgen.
Leach told the AP that he has not been told he is out of the running to become the next coach at Maryland.
“Dunno what they’re going to do,” Leach said in a text message. “My record speaks for itself.”
Before being hired, Edsall _ or any candidate _ first must get the approval of Maryland president Wallace Loh.
Edsall took the Huskies from Division I-AA into Division I-A. He has a 74-70 record after 12 seasons with UConn and has led his team to five bowls, most recently losing to Oklahoma on Saturday night in the Fiesta Bowl.
First-year Maryland athletic Kevin Anderson fired longtime Terrapins coach Friedgen before Christmas. Friedgen finished up a 10-year stint at Maryland with a victory against East Carolina in the Military Bowl.
Even before Friedgen was let go, Leach was being talked about as the leading candidate to replace him.
Leach, who won 84 games in 10 seasons with Texas Tech, was fired after the 2009 season. He had been accused of mistreating a player. He is suing Texas Tech for wrongful termination.
