NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City’s new schools chancellor was joking when she suggested birth control as the solution to crowded schools.
Chancellor Cathie Black made the quip last week at a meeting on school overcrowding.
Upon hearing that lower Manhattan would 1,000 more elementary school seats, she said birth control “would really help us.”
Black was asked about the comment at a news conference with Bloomberg on Tuesday. Bloomberg answered for her.
He said that when you go from the business world to public life, “it’s a very different world.”
He said people take things out of context and “a little bit too seriously.”
Black is the former CEO of Hearst Magazines. She had never worked in government before Bloomberg chose her as chancellor.
