WASHINGTON | A D.C. fire official says eight people have been taken to area hospitals after a van carrying special needs passengers crashed in the 3rd Street Tunnel.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes of the tunnel.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer says one person from the 15-passenger van and one person from the vehicle it collided with were taken to a hospital in serious condition and another six were taken to a hospital as a precaution. But he says there were no life-threatening injuries.
