PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins forward Jordan Staal will play in the Winter Classic against Washington, making his season debut after recovering from an infected right foot and a broken right hand.
Staal participated in the pregame skate Saturday at the Consol Energy Center and said he would play in the outdoor game at Heinz Field. The game was delayed to a nighttime start because of rain.
Coach Dan Bylsma said Staal’s ice time might be reduced as he gets into game shape. Staal will play on a line with Evgeni Malkin.
Staal didn’t miss a game to injury during his first four NHL seasons, but hasn’t played since a Game 7 playoff loss to Montreal.
Staal was a 2010 finalist for the Selke Trophy, given to the league’s best defensive forward.
