WASHINGTON (AP) - Government forecasters say a large part of the north-central U.S. faces the risk of flooding this spring.

The government says in an advance statement that the region from northeastern Montana through western Wisconsin, and following the Mississippi River south to St. Louis, could undergo moderate to severe flooding.

The formal national spring flood outlook will be issued on March 17.

This would be the third consecutive year for flooding along the Red River of the North, which forms the state line between eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. That also includes the Souris River Basin and the Devils Lake and Stump Lake drainages in North Dakota.

The forecast was based on heavy snow atop frozen ground in the region with continuing cold weather.
