GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (AP) - Infielder Orlando Cabrera has passed his physical and signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians.
Financial terms on the deal were not immediately available. Although primarily a shortstop, Cabrera, 36, will compete for the Indians’ starting job at second base. He hit .263 with four homers and 42 RBIs last season with the Cincinnati Reds, and has made the postseason in six of the past seven years.
Cabrera’s arrival means the Indians will not rush Jason Kipnis, their top minor league prospect, to the majors. Barring an injury, Kipnis will begin the season at Triple-A Columbus.
Cabrera has played only 33 career games at second in the majors, but the Indians are confident he can make the switch. Cabrera’s brother, Jolbert, appeared in 310 games for Cleveland.
