University of Virginia basketball player KT Harrell will transfer from the school, the Cavaliers announced Friday evening.
The sophomore guard from Alabama was a starter early this season, but as he struggled to hit shots, his playing time declined. He chalked it up to a lack of confidence in his shot.
Harrell could not be immediately reached. In an e-mail sent out by the school, he was quoted as saying he was grateful for his experience at U.Va. Coach Tony Bennett said in the same e-mail that he was not informed of the decision by Harrell until Friday.
Transferring has become a common theme under Bennett. He lost some of former coach Dave Leitao’s players, but recent losses have been his own.
Of his first recruiting class of six players, three have now left the program. Billy Baron left to play for his father at Rhode Island, and Will Regan reportedly left for Buffalo in search of more playing time. The motives behind Harrell’s departure remain unclear for now.
Harrell did not identify a destination. He will be eligible to play beginning next winter if he chooses to attend a Division I school.
