LUSAKA, ZAMBIA (AP) - Former U.S. President George W. Bush and his wife have launched a project in Zambia to expand the availability of cervical cancer screening, treatment and breast care education.

The George W. Bush Institute said in a statement Friday that Zambia is the first country to become part of the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon project. The Bushes were in the country Friday.

The Bush institute, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.N. AIDS agency and Susan G. Komen for the Cure are working together on the project, bringing public and private funds to the effort.

Bush, who launched PEPFAR in 2003, says “It’s not acceptable to save a woman’s life from HIV/AIDS and watch her die from cervical cancer.”
