Shooting guard Young re-signs with Wizards
Free agent Nick Young signed a one-year contract to return to the Washington Wizards. Young’s contract was announced Monday, a day before Washington’s second and last exhibition game, at the Philadelphia 76ers.
The shooting guard led Washington in scoring last season with a career-high 17.4 points per game, more than doubling the 8.6 he averaged in the 2009-10 season. His NBA career average is 10.9 points since being drafted in the first round by the Wizards in 2007.
Washington opens the regular season Dec. 26 at home against the New Jersey Nets.
• The New York Knicks signed point guard Baron Davis, adding another piece to their backcourt. He played in 58 games last season, averaging 13.1 points and 6.7 assists for the Los Angeles Clippers Cleveland Cavaliers.
• Forward-center Chuck Hayes’ $21.3 million, four-year contract was voided by the Sacramento Kings after they said he failed a physical.

Paterno out of hospital after cancer treatment
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. | A person close to Joe Paterno’s family said the former Penn State coach is out of the hospital and showing improvement after being treated for lung cancer. Paterno’s tumor is showing substantial reduction following radiation and chemotherapy, according to the source.
• Penn State interim coach Tom Bradley interviewed to keep the job on a permanent basis but doesn’t know when the school might reach a decision. He took over after school trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex-abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Reliever Francisco agrees on two-year deal with Mets
NEW YORK | Reliever Frank Francisco signed a two-year contract with the New York Mets. Francisco, 32, went 1-4 with 17 saves and a 3.55 ERA in 54 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011. The right-hander has appeared in 50 or more games in each of the past five years. He had 25 saves with the Texas Rangers in 2009.
• The Arizona Diamondbacks reached agreement on a two-year, $15 million contract with free agent outfielder Jason Kubel. Kubel, 29, had 104 home runs and 429 RBI in seven seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
