CARROLL, Iowa — Iowa’s biggest paper endorsed Mitt Romney in its Sunday editions for the Republican presidential nomination, painting him as a reasonable and thoughtful choice to send to Washington.
“Romney disagrees with Democrats on most issues, but he offers smart and well-reasoned alternatives rather than simply proposing to swing a wrecking ball in Washington,” said the Des Moines Register in its editorial announcing the choice. “He is a serious student of public policy who examines the data before making a decision. His detailed policy paper on the economy contains 87 pages of carefully crafted positions on taxes, energy, trade and regulatory policy, complete with 127 footnotes.”
The editorial board said it believed Mr. Romney, the former one-term governor of Massachusetts, would not have “knee-jerk” reactions to Democrats’ proposals but would try to find a way to work with them instead.
Mr. Romney has seen an earlier lead he held in the polls in Iowa vanish as candidate after candidate has risen and fallen among Iowa voters.
The latest to rise has been former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
